Why Cities Are Loud And How To Fix It

Noise Pollution is a serious issue in cities around the world that have adopted car centric urban planning. We often cast it aside as a minor inconvenience, but noise pollution has dangerous health impacts. Luckily, with some policy work, we can reduce noise pollution.

  1. As I like to say: people move to the suburbs because of traffic (and lower property taxes…) and then come to the city to use the cities amenities, ARE the traffic (and noise) and demand for free unlimited parking.
Also honking becomes an even bigger issue in cities, where driving is a stupid idea by itself. Why would you drive at all in Manhattan, when it's slower than walking? Or in some parts of Paris, where car traffic simply doesn't move at all and local businesses are switching to cargo bikes to get deliveries moving. And these are the places, where people think, they can "fix congestion" with honking.

  2. One other obstacle not mentioned with regards to honking enforcement is that there's a good argument to suggest that honking is constitutionally protected speech. For example, honking to show support for a protest along the side of the road would most likely be considered protected speech under 1A. Unsure much this argument has been tested in court, however.

Trains were glanced over in this video, but I think it's worth talking about regardless because it's a comment complaint by NIMBYs looking to block new transit development. May be worth looking into more deeply as a future topic. Off the top of my head, the most obvious mitigations are:
    1. Building them underground (i.e. subways)
    2. Adding skirts for streetcars to reduce noise from the bogeys
    3. Grassy tramways
    4. Adding noise barriers along corridors for heavy rail
    5. Electrification

Of course, the argument can also be made that accommodating a road/highway of equivalent capacity would almost certainly be louder than a train.

Buses would also be good to explore. Traditional gas/diesel buses can be very loud compared trolleybuses.

  3. I feel that here in LA, the influence of the "Fast and the Furious" movies has been truly awful… seems like a certain demographic of 20s male feel their life is not complete unless they are driving a race car on the streets and making a ton of noise….

  4. Thanks for sharing today. Thankfully, since 1991, we have lived in a small town, in an area with reduced traffic, lots of old trees, and NOT near a freeway. I have known about noise pollution for decades, by reading books and magazines……………………………..in the Ozarks, walkability

  5. Great video. This problem has followed me around so many of the places I've lived. I even decided to move out of an apartment in LA after the first night there because I could barely sleep due to the 10 freeway being next door. I managed to find a place about 3/4 mile from the 10, which means the area is still kind of depressed and we get lots of air pollution, but at least the traffic sounds are reduced to a low hum instead of sounding like cars are driving through my living room.

  6. Considering how much sound proofing modern cars have, most drivers don’t even realize how loud they are.
