How to Fix the Sustain Pedal on a Piano

Our Grandma’s piano had a broken sustain pedal for as long as I can remember. If you’re a piano player, you know it isn’t any fun to play on a piano without a sustain pedal. So, David, in the video, does some investigating and finds out it’s a simple, easy and quick fix.

  1. Wow, thank you David. My sustain pedal is not working, the unsustained keys are creeping up the keyboard almost note by note over the past few months. I will look inside and hopefully my husband and I can figure it out before we have to call a piano person.

  2. Thanks David! We Fixed the pedal in minutes thanks to your video. Put some glue on the rod to make sure it stays in place for a long time to come! I don’t why it came out in the first place because when I put the rod in the hole it was pretty snug but maybe just not enough. Stressing I was going to use to shell out some money and not be able to play because of down time but thanks to your video that didn’t happen!

  3. Thank you so much kind sir!

  4. THANK YOU, DAVID!!!! My family’s sustain pedal has been broken for YEARS, but I was able to fix it in under 10 minutes with your help. 🥰🙏🏻

  5. Thank you soooo much. Your video showed me there must be two rods. I had missed sustaining rod it was so close to the front I had not seen it before. Also realizing the softening portal had to be pressed raising it until clearing room was enough to allow the nail to insert in original nail hole.
So grateful for your video. I’ve been trying to figure this out for probably 6 months. I’d even had piano tuner out in hopes he would fix it and all he said was my piano was worn out!!!! It’s an oldie but goodie. Thank you! Grateful

  6. My sister loves to play holiday songs on my great grandmothers old piano, we were all home for thanksgiving and the pedal quit working. Seeing her upset I hopped on YouTube and watched 3 minutes of this video and fixed it. Thank you so much! Sisters happy and my family thinks I’m really smart 😂

  7. I’m thankful of your detailed Video, I was able to fix my Sustain Pedal. It was squeaking, so I had to apply some 3n1 Lubricant. Then, in the process of dismantling and oiling the Mechanism, the long Metal Rod dislodged and came off – I panicked, and heard my daughter yelling lovely that I am not a Piano Tech (not, anticipating unnecessary expense😬). But, FORTUNATELY – I found your Self-Help Video (Google wasn’t much of a help but YouTube did) I couldn’t thank you enough… whew … I avoided a disaster and learned a big time lesson. 🙄😥😳🥵 … I’m glad I got it all fixed now. Kudos!!!

  8. I just fixed mine, another use for duct tape. Will do it right one day.

  9. Thank you! I had guessed and "fixed" my sustain pedal, but after a minute or so of use, the rod slipped off again! After finding and watching your video, I realized I was missing the metal screw thing that goes into the top hole of the rod to keep it in place with the lever. Thank you for sharing this!

  10. Same here. I didn't really expect to find an answer on the net but thanks to you I have.

  11. SO very helpful! Thank you so much!

  13. Thnks saved my life and money

  14. This really helped me! I've got the same problem and I'm gonna tackle it myself now!

  15. "hold your mouth right"-bingo, haven't heard that since my dad said it many, many years ago, i mss him

  16. Very grateful for your share here, thank you. Because of your instructional video, we were able to repair a sustain pedal on a beautiful upright Yamaha piano at a music venue here in Toronto, so we could play a gig tonight. Your generosity made our night more special, so thank you again.

  17. Just fixed mine too just by moving the bits of wood a little

  18. Thanks so much. We just fixed our piano. We had similar problems. Your video was perfect. My kids and especially my daughter are so happy. They can play correctly now.

  19. Read about half pedal and other techniques here.

  20. THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH THIS HAS HELPED ME

  21. Thank you.  It was easy to fix once I viewed your video.  I almost called a repairman.  Glad I watched your video first.

  22. Thank you! I fixed it myself!

  23. Thank you….fixed it! Appreciate the video.

  24. Very happy to say your video helped me get my sustain pedal fixed. The screw holding the pedal to the lever had rusted and broken. I used wire to replace the screw, and also adapted ck5056's idea for the felt piece – used a slice of cork so that the rod would apply enough pressure. Thanks for posting this.

  25. Thank you. I got mine working now c:

  26. Thank you for your video, I just fixed mine, not quite the same problem but the rod could not go high enough to move the lever so I put a thick piece of felt in between the rod and the lever and it worked fine. I could not have fixed it without seeing how the pedal mechanism worked, thank you for your video.
