How to troubleshoot and repair a dehumidifier, Part 1. FarmCraft101

Watch me tear into a broken dehumidifier and get it working again with a simple FREE fix. Repairs don’t always go this well, but I’m always up for the challenge.

Dehumidifier basics:
A dehumidifier uses a simple concept to draw moisture out of the air. That is: water will condense on a cold surface, just like it does on your glass of ice water. The compressor pumps freon into a high pressure state, which makes it hot. Air then blows over this hot freon and it’s temperature falls closer to room temperature. When this cooler freon passes through an expansion valve and is allowed to return to low pressure state it gets cold. When gases expand, their temperature drops, just like if you spray an aerosol can for a little while it will feel cold. This cold freon is pumped through a coil and air from the room is blown over it. Moisture condenses on the coil and drips down into the catch pan or drain hose. The freon returns to the compressor to start the cycle again.

My basic strategy with fixing dehumidifiers is to first check the compressor/refrigeration function. If the coils get cold, then it should be fixable. At that point you just need to get air blowing over the coils. In my opinion, if the refrigeration side isn’t working, then it’s time for a tear down, as the amount of expense and work to fix it is greater than the cost of a new unit.

  1. Please let us know the length of time of extended use you were able to obtain from that repaired unit from the time you fixed it

  2. the blue things are called [ junk]

  3. Brilliant video. I suspected it was a relay problem with my dehumidifier as well, and hot-wiring across it as you did helped me to confirm the diagnosis. Need more people like you who are willing to diagnose and fix things instead of throwing them away.

  4. All the luthier always suffer with this problem , and me too

  5. I have an old Berns Air King DH 17 Dehumidifier and it worked good last year after I put a ball bearing in the fan motor to replace the bronze bushing that seized up about twice and year and had to be lubricated. But, now the coils are freezing up even when I take it out in 90 degree weather outside It has a relay and another round component on the side of the compressor but I don't know if they are both good. Someone tole me that this type of unit has to cycle the compressor off and on to keep the coils from freezing because it has no sensor in the air flow. Do you have any idea of what could be wrong with it?

  6. on mine, the blower runs, but the compressor tries to start and fails or trips the breaker, it does both. how do i fix it

  7. I accidently plugged my dehumidifier into 240v, I'm not sure what blew inside of it or if it's even salvageable

  8. "Don't do this at home." Especially here in the UK with 240v!! πŸ˜ƒ

  9. John, thank you. Your diagnostic skill in conjunction with the simple wire trace-back through relays (faulty- yes? no?) to circuit board (faulty here? yes? no?) including PAUSE -written graphics for explanations make your video(s) EXCELLENT and high value, not just for this product, but all. I'm working on a HiSense DH707P1SLE. Of all the other videos I've watched, yours is among the most generally effective for future application to other projects. Subscribed!

  10. Don't know why the machine couldn't turn on….

  11. You are very talented ,and multi skilled , I’m impressed!!!

  12. problem with all these new dehumidifiers they are cheap chinese junk i had several die on me but the old one from 1970s still worked

  13. I also did a repair of a de-humidifier on my channel. I added an alternate title for the video part way through. That title was, "How to electrocute yourself in one easy step. Good to see you working the same way. On mine I drew out the circuit and fixed the fault on the pcb. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_79OrkoRtI&t=73s

  14. Nice work John. I like to fabricobble and frankeinrepair as well…seems like it's only a matter of time before something else breaks or wears out. I have people telling me, "You know you can buy that at such and such a place." and I say that it's the easiest thing in the world to buy something. If you make it yourself, it generally is made of a higher quality and will last longer, to say nothing of the satisfaction one gets out of creating a thing. Great video thumbs up.

  15. Nice job! I like your "farm fix" haha. Great troubleshooting. Those splice tap connectors are crap – the more of them you use, the more troubleshooting experience you'll get down the road. πŸ˜‰

  16. great video except that It is not clear which wires you are connecting

  17. my unit is not draining. it seems to be collecting water in the unit and then it shuts off. I took off the connected drain tube that went to drain. The unit still does not drain in a bucket I tilt the unit and drain water, it runs and then shortly thereafter it shuts down

  18. If you want to have the fan run after the compressor shuts off, you can get a "delay on break" timer. Also, the blue connectors are often called quick splice or snap lock connectors, depending on which brand you choose. Thanks for posting. You saved me some time.

  19. THEY'VE ON TWO SEPARATE RELAYS FOR A RESON

  20. Bypassing a fault is not a repair!!,,

  21. It's not a issue of efficiency It's a electrical safety you are bypassing a safety device. You could be responsible for burning your home to the ground.

  22. Good video, Can you tell me why my dehumidifier compressor stops after 2 seconds. I let it unplugged some minutes and it starts again and stops after 2 seconds, the fan works always.
    Thanks

  23. good vid but maybe zoom in during the splice, idk which colors you spliced??!

  24. Can that 1 relay handle the current of both the compressor and the fan motor?

  25. Geat Vid many thanks from the UK

  26. Brilliant and inspiring – thank you

  27. Appreciate the time you put into this – almost 5 years later it may prove useful as I prepare to open mine up…Thanks!

  28. Clever guy. it's worth fixing if you can.
    I Do πŸ˜‰

  29. Just as a foot note. The capacitor can gradually recharge after being discharge without being plugged into power. Be careful.

  30. ITS VOOOOORRKING!! Love that Ave character.

  31. From the comments it sounds like an opportunity for someone to build a buy once dehumidifier.

  32. Picked up a nice Whirlpool unit at the curb for trash day. The thing has very little use to it going by the lack of dust on the inside. It works. It filled a bucket bin worth of water overnight. But, when the unit is triggered off by the panel or its internal on/off humidity cycle, the compressor remains running. Eventually, the compressor heats up and trips the overload sensor on top of the compressor can.

The compressor relay seems to stick in the on position. With no measured 12 volts DC at the control side of the relay, the compressor still runs. With all power removed from the unit, there's continuity on the power side of the relay. That ain't good. A $3.00 relay ordered off eBay should fix this problem. Let's just hope some other overload problem didn't cause the relay contacts to stick…

Someone threw out a nice $200 dehumidifier and I should be able to get it working for just a couple of bucks and an hour of my diagnostic time.

Some people put together jig-saw puzzles. I fix things.

  33. Thanks!
I picked up a Frigidaire dehumidifier that someone threw out and checking it out after removing the back panel I was able to verify the Compressor works fine but the fan, like yours doesn’t come on. I have some experience with electronics repair and wiring and have repaired crt and plasma televisions as a hobby so I understand the dangers of high voltage circuits. I just wanted to thank you for this video because it gave me a good idea of what and where to check with my meter which gives me a much better understanding of troubleshooting this appliance.
    Thanks!

  34. Thanks for the breakdown video, that helped! As Sam Elliot says to the Dude " I like your style"

  35. Great video it was very interesting.

  36. I have this issue but backwards. My fan blows but no compressor. Would your fix be an option for me?
