Fix shower faucet that is only hot or cold. Valve cartridge replacement.

In this video we show how to fix a shower that won’t get hot (the fix also works if it won’t get cold). All it takes is a screwdriver, pair of pliers, and a replacement cartridge!

And yes, I said ‘vice grip’ pliers a few times, I meant ‘channel lock’ pliers. Although either could work just fine.

Replacement cartridges can be found at most hardware stores or online.

🛠️ TOOLS/SUPPLIES:

The cartridge for this faucet is the Moen 1222:

  1. I saw a perfect tip for cartridges that won't move — use a hair dryer and warm up the cartridge for 5 minutes. It works!

  2. Why do I always have a ‘special’ problem ??? My one handle shower faucet only delivers hot water no matter what direction it is put in. It is not a trickle when on cold like you are talking about. It is always a full blast scalding hot stream of water. I was sure replacing the shower cartridge would fix it….. alas no. The hot and cold supplies are correct. So it has to be something between the cartridge and supply lines…. great.

  3. Great job and explanation. Thank you very much

  4. This is a tricky job unless your a qualified plumber. Tons of stuff can go wrong the worst of which is trying to pull either the collar out or cartridge and winding up damaging the hot and cold piping behind the assembly. If that gets broke your looking at a giant plumbing repair bill. Just buy the cartridge and call the plumber. Your welcome.

  5. My shower is to hot both cold and hot water work but trying to get it not to hot is impossible. My faucet has the clear plastic handle and it doesn’t have the white plastic piece I’ve seen others adjust. Any help would be appreciated

  6. not vise grips they are channel locks

  7. This worked for me after having my shower not be able to turn off for seven days. (It took me two days to figure out how to turn off the main water supply for Hot AND cold water.)

    One suggestion:
I’ve watched many videos for this specific problem with the Moen bath handle. None of the videos say what Allen wrench size key you need. It’s 7/64”. Please add that to the description to save us time and effort. I have so many different sizes of Allen wrenches but I did not have that size which costed me two trips to the hardware store before a thorough Google search.

Allen wrench key size needed: 7/64”.

    Thank you! 😊

  8. Except that's not a mixer valve. It a cartridge that goes into the mixer valve

  9. Great video. Is there a way to clean / repair the cartridge that is only letting hit water through? I rinsed it as good as i could from any visible setamint and it helped a bit, but still not great.
I'm wondering if soaking it in CLR overnight or something would help as Im not able to get to a store as we are at a remote location… thanks everyone!

  10. Can you translate it into Korean I changed the cartridges at home and only hot water comes out Can you tell me how?

  11. Oh no, the metal handle adapter in the center, has a bit different shape that's too big to go through the round back plate. I unscrewed the center screw just fine. Maybe it's been on so long it's stuck? I can turn it both ways, but it won't pull off. It's probably a much older part. I hope the guys who remodeled my house didn't leave old 1950's parts in it. UGH!

  12. Thanks for the demonstration. Can you please say, what size Allen key was used? Thanks again

  13. Im, having the same problem , but my faucet does not have brand name looks exactly like this Moen but dont know howcto buy the cartridge any help will apreciate thx

  14. To save you all some time, after he removed the pin, yank that bitch out, pop the new one back in, replace the pin, attach the handle itself to check your work, then button her up

  15. I changed my old shower hardware and cartridge but the mixer is messed up. It either flows hot water or cold water but does not mix it. Can someone suggest a resolution?

  16. stem pulled out not cartridge

  17. Do not do what he did Moen makes a removal tool for the cartridge its comes out simple and easy. I'm pretty sure they designed this with that tool in mind if I would have known would have saved me an hour.

  18. These mixer valves tend to go bad when you have high calcium in your water supply.

  19. That tool is called a channel lock plier, not a vice grip plier.

  20. I have this issue in my shower and it's SO ANNOYING! Thanks for the vid!

  21. Thank you for uploading an honest video showing the struggles that can happen!

  22. Great, how did you find out what cartridge you need for your faucet?.

  23. Did this and the temperature works great now but the faucet dribbles constantly. Any ideas?

  24. Nice video. So much better than the paper instructions included with the new cartridge. Thank you!

  25. Mine is just stuck it won’t move at all.

  26. I kept wondering when the vice-grips would come into play!
"You'd think I'd remember the name of this tool by now!"
To be fair, ,Channel locks are probably one of the most important tools in a toolkit, no matter what you call them!
But… If you'd latched on to that stem with vice-grips, pretty sure that thing would have come out. Your stem would be ruined but you replaced that anyway.

  27. Thanks for posting this repair! Big help!!
