When working with electrical in older homes that have been updated over the years it is not uncommon to run into short wires when replacing an outlet or light switch. There are 3 different options that I will go over in addition to speaking about what NEC says for the length of wires in an electrical box.

  1. Sur I have followed your tutorial exactly but the short wires coming out of the box are BLACK, Gold Ground , and A PALE YELLOW. IM NOT SURE WHAT TO DO NOW. I EXPECTED WHITE. Please help

  2. I found that you should tape the waygos the levers can open and release the wire. I love them but it has happened to me.

  3. good video and what happens if the cables are number 10 or 8 240v that would also apply?

  4. Question: do short wires pose a fire or safety risk? I recently replaced a wired smoke detector and did something stupid, which was cut off parts of the wires in the box with a stripper. Now the black wire is about 3-4″ long and the white wire is about 4″. Is it ok for one wire to be shorter than the other, or do they have to be the same length? I know they are not code compliant, but I'm not noticing anything strange using my voltage tester and IR thermometer. I don't want to possibly start a fire in the future though from my smoke detector of all places. Please let me know if I need to extend the wires just to be safe. Thank you.

  5. I prefer the new inline version of the Wago because it leaves the wire straight and easier to fold. I also tape the levers down before folding the wire to keep them from accidently opening in the box.

  6. Great video! Option 4 would be: this looks like an "add on" box and I would try to remove it to see if there was any way to loosen up some slack behind the box. Although pulling the wires from outside like you did, pretty much did the same thing.

  7. Are the wago wego whatever things pretty reliable? It looks like there is much less metal contact than twisting hard and wire nutting. I've never used one of these new connectors but they look interesting.

  8. Why do my outlets show 150 volts threw out the house

  9. Solder and seal wire connectors (tic+nn )

  10. Why not take the cut in box out? to see if you have a service loop. I have never been able to pull a service loop out just by tugging on the wires.

  11. What about braiding a new piece of wire with the old, then sliding a shrink sleeve to insulate the exposed connection? This is how I extended my old doorbell wires to reach the position of my new video doorbell.

  12. for the pigtails what wire do u use? pure copper, tinned pure copper, or (likely not.. cca)? solid or stranded? 10 or 12 or 14 g? Thanks for the videos, great as always.

  13. I would use the Wago 221-2411 Inline Connector to extend wires, (works for wires up to 4mm), as that is an easier and more compact option.

  14. If it is stapled, u can also drop some pull string tie your new wire onto the string,, take that box out and pull the string (a d ur new wire) and run the new wire that way.

  15. Check out the Wago 221 inline. 450V@32A for making these ezact splices

  16. You should always test for power in both upper and lower parts of the receptacle because both sides could be independently wired.

  17. Wow, all that time just to extend 3 wires !!! 😂

  18. Wego makes a straight connector, also.

  19. Where can I buy more copper wire?

  20. Can I use this technique to relocate a receptacle a few feet away? Thx.

  21. 2023 receptacle ground up not down

  22. Very helpful .
Only should be warning for unprofessional.
