AC fan not working – how to repair broken HVAC Run Start Capacitor – air condition

My AC stop working and blows hot air. The fan wasnt blowing when the AC was on. I opened the panel and saw the run capacitor bulging out. The run capacitor stores up charge to kick start the compressor and fan. So, if thats broken, then may be thats why my fan isn’t running. So, i bought one for $25 on the internet and it fixed the problem
This is for documentation and reference only. I am not a professional.

I made a new video in 4k quality and more info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OAGq84mQSo

Many asked where to buy a run start capacitor? Search “HVAC supply” in google maps and a local AC supply store sells it. Or go to online stores like Amazon. The following link goes to Amazon’s capacitor section:

  1. Folks: please be sure to discharge the capacitor before touching it’s contacts with bare hands! Use an insulated metal screwdriver to cross the terminals HERM & C. Do this after pulling the fuse disconnect box.

Thankfully this guy’s was discharged already and yours probably will be too if it’s blown, but it’s a simple extra safety step that takes one second.

  2. The capacitor for the blower motor for the central unit inside the house (ac/furnace) has no markings on the terminals!?

  3. I just paid $450 for this repair, I wish I had watched this video first.

  4. Thanks very simple you save me MONEY 2

  5. Great vids! New subscriber!

How would I know for sure that my condenser is working or not working?

  6. Thank you! This was a big help. We were lucky to find a capacitor at a local small appliance parts store.

  7. I use chopstick and spin on the fan now my AC is working again without replace anything..

  8. very risky. the first rule when working with high voltage capacitors is to discharge them first

  9. still not working after change capacitor

  10. will the capacitor keep the unit from coming on?

  11. just recently bought a 8 plex and with a/c season at our door step im pretty sure ur series of a/c repair vids is gonna save me a ton of money cause these places were built in the 70's and not having to call a repair guy and im already familiar with how not to get killed when messing with electrical stuff so these vids r icing on the cake, thanks buddy, stay cool! hahahaa

  12. AC went out.. I replaced the compactor, but that wasn't it. The fan won't turn on, it makes a click and a quiet buzzing noise. Any other suggestions?

  13. Exactly. With safety glasses on. Remember your eyeballs. Protect them allways. You only get one set for now.

  14. I kick started my fan outside and it works! Thanks!

  15. Hello, I am from kolkata,My ac is not blowing air, someone please tell me where can i get my ac repair in kolkata?

  16. Hi everyone, I need your help, I have an old portable a/c it works perfect when temperatures are below 32°c, but when higher than that the compressor works for a few minutes and then stops for 15, is it easy to disassemble a portable unit? What should I do???

  17. So I changed my capacitor, but the fan is still not spinning. It hums when I turn it on, but nothing. I'm thinking it could be the fan engine itself? Any help, I'm trying to avoid paying a damn handy man who will probably rip me off for something that's easy to fix.

  18. Thank you! Watched this video and 2 hours later our AC was back on. No joke. We went to our local ACE hardware and picked up the part! EASY PEASY!! Cost $30. Would have cost us over $200 for the repairman

  19. i like how half the people replaced their cap and the unit is still not working. lol

  20. I have the same problem. but I changed the capacitor three weeks ago. could I need a new motor?

  21. God bless you I just checked my capacitor and sure enough she was bulging! It was trying to turn on and couldn't so off to find one!! Thank YOU!!!

  22. It is my understanding that capacitors can hold a pretty heavy jolt of electricity even after the breaker is pulled and that they should be discharged before handling them or the wire connections to them- you neither mention this nor show how to do it- people could be at risk if that is not done in some cases.

  23. So the last time this happened it was $350 to replace the capacitor and the service guy said it was because my fan was going bad and was drawing to much current.

  24. Your video was perfect. Thanks man.

  25. This was exactly my problem. It was a $7 fix. Thank you for helping me solve it!

  26. Great video! I was hoping that maybe you could give me some advice. My air quit working properly and my maintenance man replaced the capacitor yesterday. The unit works but will only spit out cold air for about 20 minutes. After that the compressor continues to run, but the fan on top of the unit stops turning & I start getting warm air pumped into the house again. I'll shut it off for about 30 minutes & when I turn it back on everything works as it should… then after about 20 the fan will stop turning again. I've repeated this process several times & every time it's the same result.

I was just curious if there's anything I can maybe do myself to fix this problem. My guy will come back out if he has to, but I know he works a full time job (moonlights as maintenance), lives an hour away from me, & we've got thunderstorms in the forecast for the next few days. I have people in my home with serious health issues (in addition to children as well) & the sooner I can get it fixed, the better. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  27. When I turn on the unit at the thermostat i feel air blowing from the vents inside. Outside I only hear a buzzing noise coming from the unit where the wires tie into. I wonder if it could be the capacitor since I am getting power to the unit

  28. you awesome. I was about to call someone to fix it and eat my money. I decided to Google it that's when I landed in your hands. Thanks a lot . I was able to fix it myself.. God bless

  29. ALSO, if I have a main circuit board to turn off the A/C from do I still need to break into my locked box and turn the power off?

  30. Ok what brand is this compressor and what was the V for the capacitor you got because it looks very very similar to mine

  31. bro I have a question my fan is working but I couldn't air from vents why I that any help

  32. Your AC went out? Did it have a good time? 😜

  33. Internet is helping the little guy but is killing the big companies, is getting hard for them to ripoff people anymore, now if you don't know something just google it up and there it is, unless you are too stupid to figure it out like some girly guys I see outhere all the time, they can handle the heat

  34. so I replaced the capacitor with an new one and same issue. The fan won't turn on unless I give it a turn.. any ideas?

  35. Great video remember any single phase unit needs the capacitor to move any motor. The reason is that the rotational magnetic field is almost balanced equal. The capacitor absorbs a small amount of the electricity on one set of magnet poles to create a delay on that rotational magnetic pole thus inducing spin. More at http://www.airandheatindallas.com

  36. This video saved my life! Thanks for making this video. I ended up spending $68 for the capacitor and my neighbor advised me to also change out the hard start capacitor as well. Took about an hour to change out. Thanks again!

  37. how much should a repair man charge for this?
