Data error cyclic redundancy check on an external hard drive is common while trying to access a drive on a PC. But what is a Cyclic Redundancy Check? Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) is a simple data verification method that your Windows system uses to check the accuracy of data on different storage devices such as hard drives, CDs, DVDs, and USB Drives.

In general, the Cyclic Redundancy Check error occurs when CRC fails to verify the data due to accidental changes to the RAW data on the hard drive. Although, several other factors can also trigger this error including registry corruption, a cluttered hard disk, an unsuccessful program installation, misconfigured files, etc.

If you encounter a “Cyclic Redundancy Check” error, the specific drive will become inaccessible and you won’t be able to load its data at all. Here are 3 workable methods in the video that you can try to fix the data error cyclic redundancy check.

  1. does this work on usb with the same problem?

  2. Great! But I don't see my hard drive in file explorer nor can I find it with command prompt. When I open Disk Management however, the hard drive shows with a little red arrow. It says it is uninitialised and unallocated. When I right-click to reveal the Initialise option, the option is greyed out. As mentioned before, CHKDSK does not find the external. Another thing to mention, the drive appears in Device Manager. Only place it doesn't appear is File Explorer.

  3. Thanks a lot sir, method 1 is working

  4. when i run chkdsk on command prompt, I got the following messages
critical master file table (MFT) files are corrupt
read only chkdsk found bad on-disk uppercase table – using system
Stage 1: Examining basic file system structure
Attribute record (80, ") from file record segment 1 is corrupt
File record segment 4 is unreadable……..
Many more segments listed are unreadable…..(not writing all)
    5632 file records processed
    file verification completed
file record segment 3EB is an orphan
17 large files records are processed
file record segment EBC is an orphan
THIS IS DISPLAYED ON CMD PROMPT WINDOW . I COULDN'T ACCESS MY HDD after completing the CMD PROMPT UTILITY.
WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT ?

  5. My PC is not able to see the disk, in the disk management tab, it is visible, but marked as unknown, not initialized, and doesn't have a letter assigned. When I try to repair it, I get this error. I tried the second method and it didn't help, I can't try out the other ones since it doesn't have a letter assigned and it's not visible in my pc.

  6. Thank you so much, I ran the chkdsk on a 2TB external hardware, took about 7 hours, but solved the CRC error

  7. Thank you alot, i will try it.

  8. I tried to use Wondershare Recoverit but because my external disk doesn't have a letter so it cannot do anything not even scan that disk, If I try to image it that won't be possible since its storage has almost 2T while my whole pc storage has only almost 800gb, now If I could put a letter on the disk I would but whenever I try to initialize it through disk management then it show me the Cyclic Redundancy Check Error and won't let me do anything about it. I tried following this video to fix that Redundancy Check Error but nothing worked…
Also windows explorer doesn't show me the external disk because it doesn't have a letter so I can't access it at all… any other suggestions that may help?

  9. Nothing here fixed my flashdrive with that error

  10. I did this but now can't access my files, Can anyone help with this external hard drive problem? It's asking me to format, but I don't want to risk losing all my files 🤦🏾‍♀️

  11. I wanted to thank you for this. I had a portable hard drive that I thought was unrecoverable…took it to Best Buy and they wanted about $1000 to "try" to fix it. I tried your checkdisk and it worked! Took several hours, but it worked…thank you so much!

  12. It's showing chkdsk is not available for raw drives😥 help me!

  13. Hi, i really need help here. i performed the chkdsk..however during the examining it was indicated that the "File record segment E900 is unreadable." what can i do next with this?

  14. How can I fix this error when the disk does not have a drive letter?

  15. Hi, I started with the first solution and it seems like it will take many hours, how do I stop the process to try the third solution first?

post Scriptum. In the meantime, I receive a message (within the CMD) that some of the files cannot be read

  16. Just throw it to garbage can its not worth it

  17. So I did repair number 1 and it says "Cannot Open volume for direct access". I did repair number 2 and it said "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them". However the problem still exists and I am still getting the cyclic redundancy error. Any more ideas please?

  18. Wow I'm a DJ so i really need this to work so I don't lose my music
