  1. I have used similar hacks on those tiny one-cup drip brewers in hotel rooms by doing two passes – one to heat the water only, the second one using the hot water thus created to brew at a higher temp. The machine throws a tantrum when you put hot water in, but the resulting brew is much tastier!

  2. My mother, who was a home economics teacher and who to this day is fascinated with food science and chemistry, STILL stubbornly refuses to switch from her awful Mr. Coffee coffeemaker; has it switch on in the morning an hour or more before she has her first cup (which means it sits there cooking for an hour or more before she has her first cup), then lets it sit on that burner all morning. Of course, being the son, any advice I give her goes in one ear and out the other… but a few times, I've tried my best to tweak and improve it, and the SIMPLEST tweak I've come up with is one I'm surprised that you missed: after it's shot some water down into the grounds basket, just open the top and stir the grounds around to more evenly distribute the water. I'm sure I could try some of your other tips too, but that one, plus (a) using better coffee, (b) not brewing it an hour or more before she drinks it, and (c) not letting it cook on the burner all morning, would probably solve most of her coffee problems.

  3. We stumbled on how to make great coffee. We lived in the desert where the well water was slightly alkalide. Since coffee can be acidic, it resulted in our brew being more of a neutral Ph, and was far smoother

  4. I am more interested how he brew his hairs.

  5. What if instead of a hot plate we use a hot plate with a magnetic stirrer

  6. I wish coffee farmers would earn as much as all the coffee industry standard

  7. If the coffee maker has a steep and release function, why not use it as a steep and release brewer? Turn on the machine without the carafe in, then put it in after some time and let the coffee drip through

  8. What about a metal jar lid with a lip, like jam or something. It might not get wedged into the coffee, may sit on top or even float to slow down the water reaching the coffee bed.

  9. Is there a good one you would actually recommend?

  10. You neglected to mention the water delivery system on the russell hobbs machine….it isn't a simple spout like the other one….

  11. Being poor sucks in general.

  12. Interesting video. I'll try the hot water in the tank and after I've poured it just pour some into the coffee for the bloom effect. Up until now I've always used the back of a spoon to form the coffee into the filter into a cone shape to try and avoid the crater appearing. Not really sure if it's helping or not though.

  13. I'd done 2 correct before having viewed this! Hot water in the tank (though not boiling, to avoid plastic taste) and carafe held back til the water covered the whole "puck". BTW could start the run of water w/o the grounds in place, to release the cold stretch.
    cheers!
p.s. I was wondering about the water drip head thingie … but figure having the drip fall onto a pool of water would have some good effect.

  14. I found over the years that when it comes to cheap coffee makers, some of the models that are even cheaper than this actually make much better coffee when fed with hot tap water, ( My Vermont tap water is amazing), I keep my machine next to my sink, it's tiny, and I can just fill it up in a jiffy right from the sprayer. The cheaper one cup models have a few features that make it superior to these machines, first, there is no hot plate to ruin the brewed coffee. These machines usually come with an insulated cup instead.

Second, like my unit, they often have a little shower head which distributes the water evenly over the grounds.

Third, they are a little slow to brew, which helps the bloom. Forth, the cycle is short, it's only one large cup of coffee, so it is pretty gentle compared to hammering a whole pot through a basket of grounds. Also, my model comes with a reusable basket, no filters, no waste. Perhaps a little sediment at the bottom of the cup, but I don't actually dislike that. The AdirChef unit that I use definitely makes better coffee than either of these large units, and is less expensive. Might be worth you testing? Love your videos BTW, hello from Vermont, USA!

  15. Overdose and adjust ground to compensate extraction?

  16. how about dousing it with a gooseneck before the water boils from the machine
