How to Fix and Repair A Broken or Snapped Strut Bolt

You have a game plan. All the parts are laid out. Your focused. Pumped. Energized. Then, it happens; a stripped bolt, rounded bolt or rusted bolt ruins your day. Often, smaller diameter studs can be removed with a screw extractor kit. However, chassis, suspension, engine and transmission bolts are very strong and torqued quite high. The technique shown works incredibly well and is highly effective.

  1. There was a clunk sound in my car, so I thought I might tighten my struts just in case, but then righty tighty turned into righty loosey 😅

  2. I just snapped a bolt tightening up the strut when I reinstalled it in the car. Now wishing I’d used new top mount. Presumably I have to take it off to drill and tap, or there will be loads of swarf in the top of the strut? In which case isn’t it just easier / cheaper to buy a new strut too mount? I don’t have a drill and tap set or a new metal drill bit set so would need to buy these…

  3. Great Video! I've hit this issue a lot and your video definitely helps! I actually just recently had the exact same bolt issue on my brand new strut assembly so I'm super greatful for your video!

  4. What about a stud that spins can't even turn the nut off because it just spins with it

  5. at the end of the video he puts the wrong type of bolt in its up side down clown.

  6. It's a pressed stud, hammer it out and replace it with a new one that'll press in.

  7. Is it safe to drive a car if it has new struts a has a broken top strut bolt

  8. My man, wonderful presentation of how to drill and tap fresh threads. Thanks for refreshing my memory. It's been awhile, time to do exactly that. Good looking out hoss💪👊🤙😎

  9. They don't strip off if you don't over tighten them ahaha, not saying you did just mean in general people don't know how little torque those need

  10. Instead of trying to repair the strut bolt, you can just install a new strut mount that costs $10-$15. (You'll need to rent or buy spring compressors of course)

  11. I broke one of my Strut Mount bolts… It's a spline bolt I got it pressed out by a Machine shop. Do I want to replace it with another and get it pressed in by a machine shop or just use a normal bolt like this??

  12. I broke a stud today at the shop. I just hammered another stud from the old one, put the strut in the car, put nuts on the other 2 studs, then snuck the 3rd one under the car (it had a wider base, but didn't fasten to the strut hat. I threaded in the nut as far as I could, then grabbed the tip with vice grips (so it doesn't spin), while I had to use a regular wrench, and turned it until it was nice and tight. I tightened them til they were snug and I couldn't tighten them anymore with a regular ratchet. It seems to have worked.

  13. I'm glad u made this vid. I just broke one last night and I'm pissed cause I shouldda known better. Tried a hammer that fucker wouldn't come out for nothing.

  14. why would you cut threads into the strut top? it already has a nut on the end of the stud. its not like a head stud where you cant put a wrench on the other end. unless youre welding it on the other side after utting the bolt head off… then it makes sense.

  15. Y’all know you just hit it with a hammer and it falls out. It’s a press in stud just like your tires held on woth no drilling required this is a joke right?

  16. If I am adding a strut top spacer that has threads is it necessary to cut new threads into the strut after removing the bolts? Thanks

  17. thats a "collar bolt" you fool

  18. Can you simply fit a new bolt in there with a nut and washer without tapping the metal?

  19. This video could be two minutes!! But It was great tho

  20. Can this be done with strut on car through engine bay ?
