Should your leaking drain repair use plumber’s putty to avoid staining the bathroom vanity sink. We’ll also cover Teflon tape (plumber’s tape), pipe dope sealant, and silicone to fix the bathroom sink drain.

The lower Teflon tape for the black bathroom drain gasket should be wrapped counter clockwise, to match direction of the drain gasket screwing upward from underneath the leaking sink basin. The upper Teflon tape should wrap clockwise around threads of the leaking drain pipe to match the direction of the drain flange inside the sink, screwing downward onto the pipe threads in a clockwise motion.

You still have to fill up the sink basin with water until it starts to drain out through the overflow hole, then you also need to let the water suddenly all drain out. You have been moving a lot of parts underneath your bathroom vanity sink, so make sure to test for the sink trap leaking as well. If the sink trap is leaking, we add pipe thread sealant to the leaking trap connection.

Causes of your bathroom sink drain leaking underneath

If the drain hole in the sink has imperfections preventing the gasket from mating to the sink for a perfect seal. Some people have issues installing Moen faucet systems with Moen drains and they have a leak. Drain leaks happen with Glacier Bay as well, the leaking vanity drain is allowing water to leak down the threads of the drain pipe under the vanity sink. It is one root cause of your bathroom sink leaking from the drain gasket.

The drain repair solution for this vanity sink leaking issue is to wrap plumber’s tape around the top of the pipe threads where the drain flange will screw on. Wrap tape on pipe threads where rubber drain gasket mates to the bottom of the basin underneath the vanity.

  2. Wow this video is so helpful and so informative. It's very thorough and that explanation about the need for the plumbers tape will save a lot of people from a nasty headache to deal with from a leaking drain and water damage.

  3. This helped a lot although I did use putty before I came across your video. I have a slight presence of water where the cone shaped gasket meets the bottom of the sink. I think that might be because I didn't clean the bottom of the sink at all. The plastic nuts and brass nut on the old faucet were frozen. I had to cut them off. I have this exact faucet only a Moen, the tail pipe is now one piece. It's all plastic and basically a POS. Take care. P.S. next project, remove and clean bottom of sink.

  4. Why is the drain rod so floppy

  5. I am installing a Moen 8525 drain, slight water leak at bottom on one side of rubber gasket where it meets bottom of sink. I have tape on. not sure how to fix. should I put silicone on perimeter of rubber gasket that is pressed against bottom of sink?

  6. I loved your Titan content. Im so surprised to see you did these other types of videos! Thank you!

  7. I want my time back…. Waste a waste of energy πŸ‘ŽπŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£

  8. Glad I watched this , I was about to use putty on the bathroom drain pipe. Also why with kitchen sinks I have used putty is that incorrect.
    Thanks.

  9. So what do you do if there are no threads where the underside gasket hits the sink?

  10. You are now officially my best friend!! I just installed a Grohe bathroom faucet and do you think I could get that stupid thing to stop dripping?? NO!! The morons at Grohe never mentioned anything about Teflon tape nor even using silicon or putty around the drain trim piece πŸ‘Ώ. What the heck is wrong with these people? Their intended audience is often home owners. Whoever wrote the instructions should be camping out at the unemployment office. I ended up figuring out the solution, which is exactly how you do it. Many thanks, Jeff!!

  11. THANK YOU FOR MAKING MY LIFE EASIER

  12. What kind of a silicone caulk do I use to seal between the flange and the sink? Just clear bathtub caulk is okay?

  13. This is extremely helpful! Thank you for posting this.

  14. I got the glacier bay 2 handle bathroom faucet looks a lot like the one in this video. I definitely had leaks after installing and wish I saw this particular video. Thank you so much . I will put some of the Teflon tape and replace putty with silicone. Subbed and liked❀

  15. Sheesh. How about just a radiator hose from a '59 Pontiac Bonneville? It's shaped perfectly like a p-trap. Throw a couple Gates clamps on and call it good. πŸ˜‚

  16. I replaced the stopper in my bathroom sink less than a year ago. I used plumber's putty to seal the flange and now the plastic flange has broken/ snapped. This time I'll try silicone. Thank you for the helpful video!

  17. Great video, so helpful thank you.
